Local Law 191 of 2018: Deadline for Installation of Carbon Monoxide Detectors in Commercial Spaces Extended

Local Law 191 of 2018 requires buildings that are equipped with a fire alarm system and contain Occupancy Group A-1, A-2, A-3, Group B or Group M to install carbon monoxide detectors by January 1, 2021. A new bill approved by the City Council on December 17, 2020, and expected to become law on January 18, 2021, extends the deadline for compliance to July 1, 2021.

The carbon monoxide detectors installed must have built-in sounder bases, transmit a signal to a central supervising station, and comply with 1 RCNY §908-01. Carbon monoxide detectors are not required in kitchens in these buildings.

To determine the occupancy group of your building, please refer to the Certificate of Occupancy for your building.

For more information on occupancy groups, including to find examples of Assembly (Group A), Business (Group B) and Mercantile (Group M) occupancies, please refer to Chapter 3 of the New York City Building Code.
